Denzel Washington goes bad to Oscar-winning effect as Alonzo Harris, a corrupt cop who gives Ethan Hawke's rookie a first day to remember. Drugs, booze, hookers - if it's illegal, Harris has a piece of it. And anyone who doesn't like it, well, they'd be wise to keep their mouths shut. The "no more Mr Nice Guy" policy works wonders for Washington who blows virtually everyone off the screen - Hawke being the exceptional exception - in Antoine Fuqua's searing thriller. Not even a nude Eva Mendes distracts.
