After being adopted by a barber-surgeon (Stellan Skarsgard), English urchin Rob Cole (Thomas Payne) seeks a place at a college to study medicine. The trouble is it's in Persia and - because Christians are not allowed in - he pretends to be Jewish to gain admission. Ultimately, he wants to meet the great philosopher Ibn Sina (Ben Kingsley)... but he will face many trials before he realises his dream. A sprawling historical epic that pits intellectual progress against the crippling influence of global religion.
